UK to start new crackdown over online casino ads
November 21
More online casino news is coming out of the UK this week. Now,
online casino companies are facing a UK government crackdown regarding
the UK's stringent advertising and marketing laws.
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell now has a plan in effect to put
a halt to online casino companies advertising free entry to online
casino tournaments or from advertising the value of prizes won from
online casinos.
As it stands, UK laws permit online casinos to market their brands
but disallow them from offering inducements to gamble online.
Jowell also said advertisements in papers, on London Underground
platforms and on taxis had violated these laws.
Unlike land casinos, several online casino companies are based
offshore and are not subject to the laws.
But, Jowell said she is planning to target the advertisers and
publishers in the UK who work with them.
News of the anticipated action comes at a sensitive time for online
casino companies, with concern over the prospects for growth in
the industry denting confidence among some of their investors.
We will keep you posted as to any new developments in this interesting
situation in the UK.
